Aggregate breakdown and dispersion of soil samples amended with sugarcane vinasse Scientia Agricola
Ribeiro,Bruno Teixeira; Lima,José Maria de; Curi,Nilton; Oliveira,Geraldo César de.
Soil aggregation is a very complex issue related to important soil attributes and processes. The aggregate breakdown and dispersion of soil samples amended with sugarcane vinasse were evaluated using ultrasonic energy. Vinasse is an important byproduct of sugarcane industries, intensively applied to soils in Brazil as liquid fertilizer. Samples of two Oxisols and one Ultisol were used in this study. The physical and chemical characterization of soils was performed, and the 1 to 2 mm size aggregates (200 g) were packed in PVC columns (6.0 cm high and 4.0 cm internal diameter) and incubated with sugarcane vinasse under lab conditions for 1, 30 and 60 days. After incubation, aggregates were submitted to levels of ultrasonic energy, and the particle size...

Aggregation of subtropical soil under liming: a study using laser diffraction Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bortoluzzi,Edson Campanhola; Poleto,Cristiano; Baginski,Álvaro José; Silva,Vanderlei Rodrigues da.
Laser diffraction (LD) provides detailed analysis of particle size distribution. Its application to testing the stability of soil aggregates can assist studies on the aggregation of soils with contrasting electrochemical properties. The objectives of the present work were: (a) to propose a protocol for using LD to study soil aggregation, (b) to study the aggregation of an Acrisol under the influence of different doses and forms of lime. Samples were collected in 2005 from a Brazilian Acrisol that in 1994 had received 0.0; 2.0; 8.5 and 17.0 Mg ha-1 of lime, left on the soil surface or incorporated. Aggregates from 4.76 to 8.00 mm diameters were studied using the traditional method proposed by Kemper & Chepil (1965), with wet sieving, while...

Effects of land use conversion on soil aggregate stability and organic carbon in different soils Agrociencia
Ćirić,Vladimir; Manojlović,Maja; Belić,Milivoj; Nešić,Ljiljana; Šeremešić,Srdan.
Aggregate stability is an important factor of the soil functioning. Greater aggregate stability leads to greater soil organic carbon (SOC) preservation, while SOC acts as a key cementing agent in aggregation processes. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of native vegetation conversion in soil aggregate stability and SOC concentration. The investigation was conducted in the Vojvodina Province, Serbia, in July 2009. Undisturbed soil samples were taken from Haplic Chernozem, Haplic Fluvisol and Gleyic Vertisol, at a depth ranging from 0 to 20 cm. A completely randomized experimental design was used with three replicates. Each soil type was considered under treatments 1) cropland >100 years, 2) native meadow and 3) native...

Iori,Piero; Dias Junior,Moacir de Souza; Ajayi,Ayodele Ebenezer; Guimarães,Paulo Tácito Gontijo; Abreu Júnior,Áureo Aparecido.
In modern agriculture, several factors cause changes in the soil physical properties. The time of establishment of a crop (plantation age) and the slope are examples of factors that moderate the impact of mechanized operations on the soil structure. The objective of this study was to analyze the effect of machinery traffic on the physical properties of a Red-Yellow Latosol under coffee plantations with different ages (2, 7, 18, and 33 years) and slope positions (3, 9 and 15 %). Samples were collected from three positions between coffee rows (lower wheel track, inter-row and upper wheel track) and at two depths (surface layer and sub-surface). Changes in the total porosity, macroporosity, microporosity, organic matter, bulk density, and aggregate stability...

Organic Carbon and Physical Properties in Sandy Soil after Conversion from Degraded Pasture to Eucalyptus in the Brazilian Cerrado Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Sena,Karla Nascimento; Maltoni,Kátia Luciene; Faria,Glaucia Amorim; Cassiolato,Ana Maria Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT Soil is currently seen as the most relevant carbon sink and the most effective carbon stabilizer. In contrast, agriculture is the second largest C emitter, after burning of fossil fuels. This organic carbon (OC) introduced into the soil, mainly via organic matter (OM), is essential for several soil properties and plays an extremely important role in sandy soils. The objective of this study was to describe the changes in the amounts and pools of OC and the influence thereof on some physical soil properties in areas converted from pasture to eucalyptus. The following areas were analyzed: a degraded pasture (PAST), two areas of pasture-eucalyptus conversion after 2 and 15 years (EU02 and EU15, respectively) and a preserved Cerrado area (CER) in the...

RECOVERY OF AN OXISOL DEGRADED BY THE CONSTRUCTION OF A HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Carvalho,Joseane Carina Borges de; Espindola,Carlos Roberto; Alves,Marlene Cristina; Figueiredo,Getulio Coutinho; Dechen,Sonia Carmela Falci.
ABSTRACT The removal of thick layers of soil under native scrubland (Cerrado) on the right bank of the Paraná River in Selvíria (State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil) for construction of the Ilha Solteira Hydroelectric Power Plant caused environmental damage, affecting the revegetation process of the stripped soil. Over the years, various kinds of land use and management systems have been tried, and the aim of this study was to assess the effects of these attempts to restore the structural quality of the soil. The experiment was conducted considering five treatments and thirty replications. The following treatments were applied: stripped soil without anthropic intervention and total absence of plant cover; stripped soil treated with sewage sludge and...

Soil physical attributes in forms of sowing the annual winter pasture and intervals between grazing Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Veiga,Milton da; Balbinot Junior,Alvadi Antonio; Oliveira,Daniela Aparecida de.
The sowing of winter pastures in areas used for summer grain production and their management under direct cattle grazing can cause changes in soil physical attributes, whose intensity depends on the degree of soil mobilization, grazing interval, stocking rate and weather. To study these aspects it was conducted over four years an experiment in a randomized block with split plots design and four replications. In the main plots were applied two forms of sowing the annual winter pasture (direct seeding and seeding + harrowing) and, in the subplots, four intervals between grazing (7, 14 and 28 days and ungrazed). Undisturbed soil cores were sampled at the end of each grazing cycle, in the 0-0.05 m layer to determine the saturated hydraulic conductivity and...

SOIL QUALITY IN RELATION TO FOREST CONVERSION TO PERENNIAL OR ANNUAL CROPPING IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Balota,Elcio Liborio; Yada,Ines Fumiko Ubukata; Amaral,Higo Furlan; Nakatani,Andre Shigueyoshi; Hungria,Mariangela; Dick,Richard Peter; Coyne,Mark Steven.
Many forested areas have been converted to intensive agricultural use to satisfy food, fiber, and forage production for a growing world population. There is great interest in evaluating forest conversion to cultivated land because this conversion adversely affects several soil properties. We examined soil microbial, physical, and chemical properties in an Oxisol (Latossolo Vermelho distrófico) of southern Brazil 24 years after forest conversion to a perennial crop with coffee or annual grain crops (maize and soybeans) in conventional tillage or no-tillage. One goal was to determine which soil quality parameters seemed most sensitive to change. A second goal was to test the hypothesis that no-tillage optimized preservation of soil quality indicators in...

Structural quality of polyacrylamide-treated cohesive soils in the coastal tablelands of Pernambuco Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Melo,Diego Vandeval Maranhão de; Almeida,Brivaldo Gomes de; Souza,Edivan Rodrigues de; Silva,Laércio Santos; Jacomine,Paulo Klinger Tito.
Water-soluble polymers are characterized as effective flocculating agents due to their molecular features. Their application to soils with horizons with structural problems, e.g, a cohesive character, contributes to improvements in the physical quality and thus to the agricultural suitability of such soils. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the structural quality of soils with cohesive horizons of coastal tablelands in the State of Pernambuco treated with polyacrylamide (PAM) as chemical soil conditioner. To this end, three horizons (one cohesive and two non-cohesive) of a Yellow Argisol (Ultisol) were evaluated and to compare cohesive horizons, the horizon of a Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) was selected. The treatments consisted of aqueous PAM solutions...
